My History and Background

I joined Royal Mail in 1978, and from the outset I always attended union meetings as I had a very keen interest in workers terms and conditions and general working class issues. Following some encouragement, I took up the position of Assistant Secretary Transport around 1989, and then in 1993 when we had the Branch mergers I became the Branch Chairman of the then newly formed Northern Ireland No.1 Branch. The Assistant Transport Secretary's position was renamed and became the Area Distribution Rep, a position I have held throughout my union career, which I still hold today.  In 2008, I became Branch Secretary of the newly formed Northern Ireland Combined Branch, a position I presently hold.  I have held various other positions in the Branch such as, Deputy Branch Secretary and Local Unit Rep Distribution.  All this activity over the past 25 years has culminated into the position I have now been successful in gaining; a position I am extremely proud of, and that's being elected to the National Postal Executive Council, where I find myself representing all our members throughout the UK.  It can't go without saying that, It is with thanks to the members of the Northern Ireland Combined Branch who supported me for this position, and I am extremely grateful for their continued support.

I may not have achieved all of the above were it not for the education the CWU provided for me, of which I have gained a vast amount of knowledge and experience.  I was trained in Industrial Relations as a negotiator; educated in Employment Law, Trade Union & Labour Studies, and then going on to study the same subject for a Bachelor of Arts at London Metropolitan University.  I am fully trained on all Royal Mail internal processes and procedures, and became a tutor for the North West Regional College in Northern Ireland to help train our representative on Equality & Diversity along with training on Postal Agreements and procedures, but to name a few. After 36 years with Royal Mail, I suppose this is my union history in a brief nutshell, and It is my intention to continue working on behalf of all our members, whether in Northern Ireland or the rest of the UK.
